Both approaches can solve grade problems, but they solve them differently. Regrading changes the shape of the land. A retaining wall holds a more abrupt change in elevation. The better choice depends on how much space is available, what the property needs to support and how water moves through the area.
Regrading can be a strong option when there is enough room to create a gentler transition.
Instead of holding the elevation change in one place, the ground is reshaped across a wider area.
This may work well when the primary problem is poor runoff, an awkward slope transition or ground that needs to be shaped into a more usable grade.
It also avoids adding a wall when the land itself can accomplish the goal.
A retaining wall becomes more useful when the elevation change needs to happen within a smaller footprint.
That can matter near a driveway, parking area, building zone, yard edge or other improvement where simply extending the slope would consume too much usable space.
The wall holds the grade transition while the surrounding drainage and ground are planned around it.
A wall does not eliminate the need for good grading.
And grading does not eliminate every need for retention.
Many properties work best when the surrounding ground is reshaped to control water while a retaining wall handles the portion of the elevation change that needs to remain compact.
If the slope can extend gradually without taking away needed useable area, regrading may be practical.
Driveways, pads, structures and access routes can affect how much freedom there is to reshape the land.
Neither solution works well if runoff is ignored.
A decorative yard transition and a grade supporting residential access are different problems.
A photograph can show the slope.
It usually cannot show the whole water path, the access limitations or how the surrounding grade connects.
The best first step is to define what is failing now and what you want the property to do after the work is complete.
Cost depends on the amount of earthwork, access, slope, drainage and the retaining solution being considered. ELMS does not publish generic price ranges because the site conditions can change the scope substantially.
